Moving Day usually separates the contenders from those who fall by the wayside. At Real Club de Campo, on a course that presented players with a very different challenge on Saturday, Shane Lowry, Ludvig Åberg and Marco Penge have shown why they belong among golf’s elite. All three signed for a four-under par 67 after outstanding rounds in conditions that required precision, class and a cool head. So often, when the course demands the best golf, the best players rise to the occasion.
Tougher fairways and greens that had sped up to 12.5 on the stimp created a very different scenario to that of the first two days. Slick greens, approach shots that demand pinpoint control, and severe punishments for the slightest mistake. These are the kinds of conditions that allow the cream to rise to the top, indeed three of the day’s lowest rounds came from top-class players.
Marco Penge’s performance deserves particular credit. The defending champion has carded a spectacular round of 67 to sit at -4 overall. Barely 24 hours ago, he seemed like a dead cert to miss the weekend; two double bogeys on his front nine on Friday had dropped him to a cumulative +5 and left him on the brink of elimination.
All this after travelling halfway round the world to defend his title. Penge had competed the previous weekend in Utah, in the United States, and arrived in Madrid with a nine-hour time difference, thousands of kilometres behind him and barely any time to recover. Fatigue and jet lag threatened to take their toll, but the Englishman refused to give up. It’s impossible to know what he might have achieved here were it not for that gruelling journey, although his response has allowed him to turn around a week that threatened to come to an abrupt end.
Åberg also made a mark with his own 67. On his first appearance in Madrid, the Swede showcased the potential that has made him one of the leading figures in world golf and made it clear that next year he will be one of the names to watch. He played alongside Shane Lowry, who also finished four under par after a superb round. The Irishman came close to carding an even more spectacular score, but a bogey on the 14th halted his momentum. Even so, he finished on a high note, finding the green from the 18th tee, much to the delight of the fans packing the stands at the final hole.
All three signed for identical scores: 67 strokes and four under par for the day. Åberg and Lowry shone playing together in the same group, whilst Penge staged his own remarkable comeback after narrowly making the cut on Friday. The lead is still a long way off, but on Saturday at Real Club de Campo they have more than proven their immense quality; three stars, three outstanding rounds, and a stunning response to one of the week’s most demanding tests.
