Patrick Reed is back at the Open de España presented by Madrid, where he is bidding to extend his lead in the Race to Dubai, with a very clear idea of where world golf should be heading; the best players in the world should not only compete in the US.
The American, who has played a very international schedule for many years, highlighted the value of playing in different countries, playing new courses and entertaining fans all over the world.
“I think the best players in the world should play all over the world”, explained Reed, who believes that playing in America most of the year is to forgo many of the experiences on offer in overseas golf. Spain is one of the destinations the 2018 Masters champion believes is worth discovering and enjoying.
Since leaving LIV Golf, Reed has travelled all over the planet to compete, something that has made him one of the stars of the season on the DP World Tour. He arrives in Madrid leading the Race to Dubai, but he is not about to change the mentality that has brought him so much success all year.
“I can’t control what everyone else is doing. I can just go out there, try to play my best golf and try to win tournaments”, he said. For Reed, the formula is simple; keep doing his job and let the leaderboard do the talking.
Reed’s return to Madrid is also particularly significant after a wrist problem forced him to withdraw from the BMW PGA Championship and take a couple of weeks off. Reed insisted that he is fully recovered and raring to go.
The Texan is particularly fond of the black course at Real Club de Campo, which he says forces him to use his head, focus on distance control and put the ball in the right places. He also greatly appreciates the atmosphere provided by the Madrid fans every year.
And so Patrick Reed is back in one of the very places that proves his point; to really discover world golf you have to get yourself out there, travel, and compete. This week, with the Race to Dubai at stake, Reed’s personal world tour is stopping off in Madrid.
