Shane Lowry, Ireland’s Olympic flag-bearer, will tee it up at the ACCIONA Open de España presented by Madrid

The charismatic Shane Lowry, currently ranked number 30 in the world, has confirmed his participation in the ACCIONA Open de España presented by Madrid, which takes place at Club de Campo Villa de Madrid from 26 to 29 September.

The Irishman will be joining the likes of English player Tommy Fleetwood – silver medallist at the recent Olympic Games in Paris – and France’s Matthieu Pavon, who claimed the Spanish title in 2023.

“In my first year on Tour, way, way back in 2009, I played in what was then the Madrid Masters and I remember having the best time”, said Lowry. “Madrid is such an amazing city to visit and, from what I have heard, Club de Campo is a beautiful course, with stunning views of the City centre. So, I am really looking forward to both playing in the ACCIONA Open de España presented by Madrid and returning to one of my favourite cities in Europe.”

With seven prestigious victories to his name, four on the DP World Tour and three on the PGA Tour, Shane Lowry’s biggest win to date came at The Open in 2019.

Known for his affability and ball-striking, Lowry had the honour, alongside athlete Sarah Lavin, of carrying Ireland’s flag during the opening ceremony at the Olympic Games recently held in the French capital, a sign of the global popularity of a golfer who shares his time between the PGA and DP World Tours.

A lover of all sports, particularly Gaelic football, rugby and football, Shane taught himself to play golf at the age of 13 on a pitch and putt course in his native Clara, in county Offaly. He honed his now-famous short game on the greens of Esker Hills.

The Ryder Cup star’s career sky-rocketed in 2009 when he won the Irish Open as an amateur. The European Tour title immediately catapulted him into the professional game.

“My life changed from one day to the next. At that time I wasn’t even a student, I’d left university. I was just an amateur golfer. I didn’t have much money in my bank account. And suddenly you’re on the European Tour. It was huge for the city, there was a parade and we partied until the early hours,” remembers Lowry.

Three years later, he won the 2012 Portugal Masters and, having earned himself a PGA Tour card, he won the WGC – Bridgestone Invitational in 2015, before triumphing at The Open in 2019, an achievement that earned him global fame.

Further titles at the 2019 Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship, the 2022 BMW PGA Championship the Zurich Classic of New Orleans earlier this season make Shane Lowry one of the biggest draws in golf, and he will be teeing it up at the ACCIONA Open de España presented by Madrid late in September.

Tickets for the ACCIONA Open de España presented by Madrid are now available.
