As the Open de España presented by Madrid embarks on a new edition it finds itself firmly established as one of the capital’s major sporting events and it boasts a field that reflects the tournament’s growth in recent years. The official tournament presentation in Madrid was attended by the mayor, José Luis Martínez-Almeida; the president of the Royal Spanish Golf Federation, Juan Guerrero-Burgos; the president of the Open de España presented by Madrid, Gerard Tsobanian; and golfers Patrick Reed, Marco Penge and Ángel Ayora.
This year’s spectacular line-up was one of the main talking points at the event. Spearheaded by the biggest names in international golf and bolstered by a strong Spanish contingent, the field represents, in the words of Tsobanian, the “culmination of work that began seven years ago”.
The president of the Open de España spoke of the promise he once made: to bring the tour’s best players to Madrid. Seven years later, he believes the tournament is honouring that commitment. “A number of big names are coming this year, and that’s the result of work we began seven years ago”, Tsobanian explained. “The promise was specifically to bring the best players to Madrid, and I believe we are delivering on it.”
The progress was also highlighted by the president of the Royal Spanish Golf Federation, Juan Guerrero-Burgos, who described this year’s event as “without doubt, the best Open de España in terms of the players you’ve brought in” and stressed the aim of pursuing excellence at one of the continent’s most historic tournaments. The Open de España, the second-oldest tournament in Europe, has become a key fixture on the DP World Tour.
The mayor of Madrid also praised the tournament’s growth and its place in a first-class sporting calendar. Almeida said the Open de España “has already developed its own identity as a major sporting event in the city” and pointed to this year’s field as clear evidence of that progress.
The presence of Patrick Reed, the leader of the Race to Dubai, defending champion Marco Penge, and one of Spanish golf’s brightest prospects, Ángel Ayora, symbolises that step up in quality. They are joined in the Spanish capital by an international line-up featuring world-class golfers such as Lowry, Hatton and Rose, making this one of the most attractive years in the championship’s recent history.
For the players, Madrid also provides a unique setting. Reed highlighted the bond he has formed with the city and the tournament since his first appearance, praising in particular the atmosphere and the support of the fans. Penge, the defending champion, returns to a venue he considers one of his favourite places, while Ayora comes into his home open excited to be competing in front of the Spanish crowd. The mayor of Madrid went even further, readily naming Madrid as one of the five most important cities in the world, alongside New York, Los Angeles, London and Paris.
Real Club de Campo Villa de Madrid will once again host a week that goes beyond sport. The Open de España does not simply want to keep growing, it wants to fulfil its promise of bringing the best players to Madrid every year. By the look of this year’s spectacular field, it is a plan that remains well and truly on course.
