The Open de España heads into the weekend with a breathtaking leaderboard. The lead is tightly contested, three Spaniards are on the charge, and an international showdown promises high drama. Shane Lowry and Ludvig Åberg will play together on Saturday, providing one of the main attractions on a day when Real Club de Campo will once again put the tournament’s leading players through the wringer. The pair will tee off at 10:08 alongside Dutchman Joost Luiten as they aim to eat into the eight-shots separating them from Grant Forrest.
The Swede and the Irishman are the two highest-ranked players still in contention, and they still have time to force their way into the thick of the battle. Both have struggled on the greens over the first two rounds, but a spectacular round on Saturday could spread panic through the field ahead of the final round. If their putters were to warm up and find some consistency, the group could become one of the focal points on moving day. Two global superstars playing together, forced to attack if they want a part in the final showdown.
A number of home players will also be sure to have their fair share of the spotlight. The leading Spaniards are Eugenio Chacarra (-7), Ángel Ayora (-5) and Sergio García (-4). They will hope to harness the crowd’s support and close in on the leaders. Sergio tees off at 12:16 alongside Adrian Otaegui and Matthew Jordan; Ayora will follow at 12:27 with Romain Langasque and Victor Perez; and Chacarra will complete the Spanish trio at 12:49, in the company of Jacob Skov Olesen and Joe Dean. Three groups heading out almost back-to-back for the enjoyment of the home fans making the trip to Real Club de Campo.
The leader, Grant Forrest (-9), will have to defend his position as part of an unusual final group. The Scotsman will play alongside his compatriot Connor Syme and Switzerland’s Joel Girrbach, both on -8, in a match that could spring a surprise with some fireworks to capture the imagination of the wider public. The threesome will tee off at 13:00, bringing the day’s play to a close from the top of the leaderboard.
Forrest is a familiar face in Madrid and will be playing fearless golf. The Scotsman feels at home at Real Club de Campo, he has recorded two third-place finishes there and created a memorable moment in 2021 when he made a hole-in-one on the 9th. He will now look to turn that strong connection with Javier Arana’s course into what would undoubtedly be the biggest victory of his career to date.
Marco Penge, the defending champion, will also be one to watch when he tees off at 09:48 alongside Daniel Rodrigues and David Law. The Englishman produced a dramatic comeback to make the cut and now wants to keep alive his dream of retaining a title that changed his life.
Saturday’s protagonists are ready to take to the stage: Lowry and Åberg will make a charge for the lead, the Spaniards will bid to inch closer to glory, and Forrest will defend his top spot from Girrbach and Syme. Add to this a packed leaderboard with 23 players separated by just five shots, and one thing is certain: a thrilling Saturday awaits.
