Shane Lowry, unanimously considered one of the best golfers in the world, has added his name to the battle for the trophy at the Open de España presented by Madrid, which will take place at Club de Campo Villa de Madrid from 8 to 11 October.
The Irish golfer, who has won a number of hugely prestigious titles, is capable of the spectacular and will surely be a serious contender for a title on which Jon Rahm, Tyrrell Hatton, and a large contingent of Spanish players will also have their hearts set, along with last year’s champion, Englishman Marco Penge.
Shane Lowry has enjoyed a hugely successful career and his charisma has made him one of the most popular players on the DP World Tour. His CV includes seven professional wins, four on Europe’s premier circuit and three on the PGA Tour. It is a record that reflects the quality of a game that earned him a place on the European Ryder Cup team in 2025.
In the hostile atmosphere at Bethpage, the Irishman contributed 2 points to the European victory, defeating Justin Thomas & Cameron Young and claiming a half against Sam Burns & Patrick Cantlay, both alongside Rory McIlroy. In the singles, Lowry sunk the putt on the 18th that gave Europe the half point they needed to retain the trophy. It was a moment he will never forget.
However, the triumph that provided a turning point in his career came years earlier, in 2019, when he won the Open Championship to consolidate himself among the elite of world golf.
A decade earlier he had already rewritten history by becoming just the third amateur golfer to win an event on the European Tour. He did so at the 2009 Irish Open. It was a victory that would change the course of his personal and sporting journey.
“My life changed from one day to the next. At the time I wasn’t even a student, I’d left university. I was just a golf lover. I didn’t have much money in my bank account. And suddenly you’re on the European Tour. It was huge for the city, there was a parade and a party until the early hours”, remembers Lowry.
But more success would follow. Including the 2012 Portugal Masters and in 2015, now with a PGA Tour card to his name, the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational. His defining moment came four years later with the aforementioned Open Championship win, the jewel in the crown of a career that puts him among the biggest names in world golf.
His title haul also includes the 2019 Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship, the 2022 BMW PGA Championship, and back on the US tour, the 2024 Zurich Classic of New Orleans, results that reaffirm his status as one of the superstars of world golf and will add to the clamour to watch him light it up at the Open de España presented by Madrid.
Off the golf course, Shane Lowry is a fan of Gaelic football, rugby and football. His warmth and popularity, along a brilliant sporting career, earned him the honour of carrying the Irish flag alongside Sarah Lavin during the opening ceremony at the 2024 Olympics in Paris.
