The Bethpage hero is back: Lowry returns to Madrid thirsty for more

Shane Lowry’s second consecutive appearance at the Open de España presented by
Madrid had been an open secret since his 2024 visit to the Spanish capital. The Irishman
was enamoured by the city, the golf course, and even by Real Madrid after watching them
    play Alaves in the Bernabeu.

Last year, a lack of experience on the Javier Arana layout proved to be his undoing; a poor
round on Thursday severely dented his chances of a trophy. However, despite that opening
+4, he hauled himself back into an impressive 13 th position finish, going under par on each of
    the final three days.

The Ryder Cupper returns as the man of the moment. The hero of Bethpage, who just a
week ago gave Europe the crucial half point they needed to retain the Ryder Cup, will be
teeing it up again this week at Club de Campo. Lowry is also a former Open Champion, and
he will only have one thing on his mind as he returns to Madrid; victory. The story of how he
conquered Royal Portrush, his only major to date, is the stuff of fairytales. In 2019, Lowry
arrived at the Open Championship on the Emerald Isle without having come close to a win
from the previous 26 majors he had competed in. When the event returned to the island of
Ireland after 68 years, Lowry’s resounding victory was one of the most memorable in Irish
golf and earned him legendary status at home.

He celebrated in style, in a pub in the town, Claret Jug in hand, surrounded by family, friends
and his caddie. The video of him standing on a table, singing along to The Fields of Athenry
is a must-watch for those wishing to see who the real Shane Lowry is; a humble and happy
    man.

Lowry has had a turbulent 2025 in the majors, making the cut at The US Masters and The
Open, while at the PGA Championship and the US Open he put in a disappointing
performance. However, all of this will only make him more determined to stamp his authority
    in Madrid.

The 38-year-old is a huge figure in Ireland. Only three players have managed to win as an
amateur on the European circuit, and Lowry made headlines when he won the Irish Open in
2009 to become the third. It is no surprise that he was bestowed the honour of carrying his
country’s flag in the opening ceremony at the Olympic Games in Paris alongside Sarah
Lavin. With seven wins on the PGA and DP World Tours, he has also won the hearts of his
    people.

One of the best players in the world around the greens will be in action at Club de Campo
Villa de Madrid from 9 to 12 October. Don’t miss your chance to watch Shane Lowry ply his
trade in the flesh, he never fails to entertain.Tickets for the Open de España presented by Madrid are now available here.
