The official launch of the Open de España presented by Madrid provided an exceptional photo opportunity. Alongside the trophy the new champion will hoist to the sky on Sunday were two of the most recognisable symbols of world golf: the Masters trophy and The Open’s famous Claret Jug.
These three special guests were brought together for good reason. The winner of the Open de España presented by Madrid will take home much more than a title. Just as Marco Penge did twelve months ago, the champion of this year’s tournament will receive an invite to play in the Masters and The Open in 2027, two of the biggest events on the international calendar.
Thus, the three trophies that sat side-by-side at the presentation also represent the doors that will open for whoever manages to triumph this week at Real Club de Campo Villa de Madrid.
However, that person will first have to win the Open de España. To do so they will need to outplay one of the strongest fields in the history of the event, with names such as Ludvig Åberg, Shane Lowry, Tyrrell Hatton, Patrick Reed, Sergio García, Justin Rose and defending champion, Marco Penge.
Then two venues that form an integral part of the history of golf, Augusta National and St. Andrews, the home of golf, will await. Quite something!
The presence of the two major trophies at the presentation of the Open de España provided a particularly visual reminder of just what is up for grabs this week in the Spanish capital.
Three trophies, three competitions with a colossal history behind them and, for the champion of the Open de España presented by Madrid, a road that starts on Sunday by lifting one of them, and continues in 2027 with an opportunity to fight for the other two.
