“I wasn’t able to take advantage of the easy conditions of the course this morning”. Jon Rahm cut a frustrated figure after his second-round 69 at the ACCIONA Open de España presented by Madrid. “Giving myself a few chances from between 12 and 20 feet and missing all the greens wasn’t ideal”. Despite his infuriating round, the Basque had no qualms about admitting it is more than enough to keep him in the fight for the title. “I saved the day, I saved the score. I have a chance going into the weekend”.
Rahm was quick to point out the positives of his round: “I was pretty comfortable on the tee. If I can keep hitting my driver like I did today, I’m going to get a lot of chances”. He was also upbeat when asked about jetlag and fatigue: “I’m feeling better every day, I slept quite well the last two nights and it’s showing”.
The Barrika native will tee it up on the 1st at Club de Campo on Saturday five shots behind the tournament’s surprise package, Angel Hidalgo. Asked by a journalist what his advice would be for the player from Marbella this weekend as the sole leader, the Basque broke into a smile: “Competing against me? None! He can figure it out himself!”.
Rahm stated on Wednesday that if he were in contention come the weekend, it would be time to demand more of him. No sooner said than done. He is bidding to make history, by winning his fourth Open de España and surpassing the great Seve Ballesteros. Despite his struggles, he is still in the thick of the battle. As always, the 36 holes he has played so far have been in the company of thousands of fans cheering him along as he vies for victory. Can he do it? Tune in this weekend to find out…
