Tommy Fleetwood has added his name to the stellar line-up for the ACCIONA Open de España presented by Madrid, where he will be competing alongside Jon Rahm and Justin Rose. The event takes place at the Club de Campo Villa de Madrid from 6 to 9 October.
The Englishman has been one of the biggest draws on the DP World Tour for almost a decade. One of the most popular players among peers and fans alike, the amicable Englishman has five DP World Tour titles to his name and has appeared in two Ryder Cups.
He enjoyed a distinguished amateur career that included wins at the 2009 Scottish Amateur Stroke Play Championship and the 2010 English Amateur and also represented Great Britain and Ireland in the 2009 Walker Cup before joining the professional ranks a year later.
The Southport native won his maiden professional title in 2013 at the Johnnie Walker Championship at Gleneagles in Scotland. Four years would pass before his next triumph (at the 2017 Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship), but then the floodgates opened; three more would come in the space of three seasons – the 2017 French Open, a successful title defence at the 2018 Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship and finally the 2019 Nedbank Golf Challenge in South Africa.
The run would sky-rocket Fleetwood to 9th in the world rankings and earn him a place on the 2018 Ryder Cup squad, where he and Francesco Molinari made history by winning all four of their matches at Le Golf National, helping Europe to a resounding victory.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Fleetwood struggled to maintain momentum and a lack of consistency saw him drop to number 50 in the world. However, 2022 has seen him produce six top-10 finishes, five of them in his last nine outings, including 5th at the US PGA Championship and 4th at the 150th Open Championship at St. Andrews.
This return to form has seen him quickly climb back to No. 26 in the world rankings and, with his sights firmly set on a return to the top 10, his next win promises to be just around the corner.
