The first at Club de Campo Villa de Madrid is proving to be the toughest to negotiate at the Open de España presented by Madrid. On Saturday, the average score for the opening hole was 4.55, when it tripped up thirty-five players as they started their rounds. Add this to the fact that the 2nd hole is the seventh most difficult on the course, and you get a fearsome opening to the round. Parring both holes is a very solid start. One player, however, seems to be enjoying himself more than most on the dastardly openers.
David Puig birdied the first two holes on Saturday, making him the first player to do so all week. He poured in a spectacular 27-foot putt on the 1st followed by another from 17 feet on the 2nd. 44 feet of putts drained in two holes. Not bad. The Spaniard is bidding for what would be his second straight year in the final group of the Open de España on Sunday and he fired something of a warning shot with his start on ‘moving day’.
No other player has been two under through two this week, yet Saturday is not the first time Puig has pulled it off, he did exactly the same in round 2. Puig is yet to taste victory on the DP World Tour, but at 23 years of age, he continues to demonstrate that he has what it takes to become a great player. There have been plenty of clues, and his start on Saturday is just one more sign that he is made of different stuff.
