Irishman Shane Lowry, unanimously considered one of the best golfers in the world, has confirmed his presence at the Open de España presented by Madrid, which takes place at Club de Campo Villa de Madrid from 9 to 12 October, with Angel Hidalgo’s stunning win last year still fresh in the memory.
A captain’s pick for team Europe for the Ryder Cup at Bethpage (New York) from 26 to 28 September, Shane Lowry will draw some big crowds at a tournament that will also enjoy the prowess of the likes of Jon Rahm and Sergio Garcia, two more big names in a competition where fireworks are always guaranteed.
Shane Lowry has a stunning resumé and enough anecdotes to make him one of the most charismatic players on the DP World Tour. His cabinet includes seven winners’ trophies, four from the DP World Tour and three from the PGA Tour, the greatest of which came in 2019, when he cemented his name in the history of the game with a spectacular victory at The Open.
Ten years before that memorable week, he became only the third amateur to win on the European Tour at the 2009 Irish Open.
“My life changed from one day to the next. At the time I wasn’t even a student, I’d left university. I was just a golf lover. I didn’t have much money in my bank account. And suddenly you’re on the European Tour. It was huge for the city, there was a parade and a party until the early hours,” remembers Lowry.
Three years on from his great feat, he won the Portugal Masters in 2012 and, once he had his PGA Tour card, he took the spoils at the 2015 WGC – Bridgestone Invitational, firmly establishing himself in the game before his crowning moment in 2019, when he won the aforementioned Open and became one of the leading figures in world golf.
The 2019 Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship, the 2022 BMW PGA Championship, and back on the US tour, the 2024 Zurich Classic of New Orleans make Shane Lowry a superstar of world golf and he will be teeing it up at the Open de España presented by Madrid in early October.
The Clara native, a lover of Gaelic football, rugby and football, is an affable and charismatic player, a fact which, together with the quality of his golf game, earned him the honour of carrying the Irish flag alongside Sarah Lavin during the opening ceremony at the 2024 Olympics in Paris.
